ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Roberto Abusada, LatinSource Peru
Roberto Abusada has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1999. He is also founder of Econsult, an economic consulting firm in Lima. In 1990, Mr. Abusada was part of the Peruvian economic program, where he was the key liaison person between The World Bank and the government of Peru. In 1993, he was appointed senior advisor to the Minister of Economy. Mr. Abusada also served as vice minister at the Ministry of Trade and Economy and was director of the Board of the Central Bank until 1983. He was one of the founders of the Instituto Peruano de Economia. He holds a BA from the Catholic University of Peru and Doctorate in Economics from Cornell University.
Gustavo Arteta, LatinSource Ecuador
Gustavo Arteta has been an advisor for LatinSource since 2000. Since 1998, he has been the director of the Corporación de Estudios para el Desarrollo (CORDES), an economic think-tank that researches on Ecuador's economy and politics. Previously, Dr. Arteta worked at the Research Department of the Central Bank of Ecuador. From 1995 to 1997, he was coordinator for the Economics Department at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. Between 1990 and 1995, Dr. Arteta was country analyst for various Central American countries at The World Bank in Washington, D.C. He has a B.A., M.A. and a Doctorate in Economics from George Mason University.
Murillo de Aragão, LatinSource Brazil Politics
Muriilo de Aragao has been an advisor for LatinSource since 2000. He is also president of Arko Advice, a political and public policy firm based in Brasilia, which he founded in 1982. From 1992 to 1995, Dr. de Aragao was research fellow at the Social Science Research Council in New York. He has been a board member of the International Federation of the Periodical Press in London since 1988, and a counselor of the National Council for Self-Regulating Publicity. Dr. de Aragao a has B.A. in Law from the Faculdade de Direito do Distrito Federal, a Master in Political Science and a Doctorate in Sociology from the University of Brasilia.
Juan Carlos Echeverry, LatinSource Colombia
Juan Carlos Echeverry joined LatinSource in August 2002. From 1998 to 2002, he held several positions at the Ministry of Planning; first he was appointed chief economist, then deputy general director and later became general director at the National Planning Department. From 1995 to 1997, Dr. Echeverry was director and senior researcher at the Central Bank of Colombia. He also worked as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C. Dr. Echeverry has a Doctorate in Economics from New York University and a B.A. in Economics from Universidad de Los Andes.
Guillermo O. Chapman, Jr., LatinSource Panama
Guillermo Chapman has been an advisor for LatinSource since 2000. He is also president and founder of INDESA. From 1994 to 1998, he served as minister of Planning and Economic Policy, where he implemented market-oriented economic reforms. In his ministerial capacity, he was governor of the International Monetary Fund, The World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. In the public sector, Mr. Chapman served as economic staff to the President from 1961 to 1963 and economic advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Between 1964 and 1968, Dr. Chapman was negotiator of the Panama Canal treaty. He received a BA in Economics and an MA in Finance and Economics from Louisiana State University.
Fritz Du Bois, LatinSource Peru
Fritz Du Bois has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1999. He is also manager of the Instituto Peruano de Economia, an economic think tank that promotes market-oriented reforms. Until 1998, Mr. Du Bois was chief advisor at the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Peru. From 1991 to 1998, he was head of the Adjustment Lending Program of Peru's Structural Reform Program. During the 1980's, Mr. Du Bois was the Peruvian representative of several international commodity organizations in London and was in charge of promoting Peruvian trade and investments. He studied Business Administration in London and Humanities at The Catholic University of Peru.
Jonathan Heath, LatinSource Mexico
Jonathan Heath has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1992. He is also president of Jonathan Heath y Asociados, an economic consulting firm, which he founded in 1992. In 1987, Mr. Heath became the CEO and chief economist of MACRO Asesoria Economica, an economic consulting firm owned by the Serfin Financial Group. In 1983, he joined Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates as director of the Mexican project. During his four years at Wharton he developed and expanded a model of the Mexican economy. Mr. Heath also worked as assistant director of Macroeconomic Studies at the Ministry of Budget and Planning in Mexico. He graduated in Economics from the University of Anahuac and has a Graduate Degree of Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Ruth Krivoy, LatinSource Venezuela
Ruth Krivoy has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1994. She is also president of Sintesis Financiera, which she founded in 1982. From 1992 to 1994, she was president of the Central Bank of Venezuela. In that capacity, she also served as Venezuelan governor of the International Monetary Fund. From 1963 to 1976, Ms. Krivoy worked at the Central Bank as vice-president of Economic Studies and advisor to the President. She has held several executive positions with commercial and investment banks in Venezuela. Dr. Krivoy has also served on official commissions on public sector reform (1989-1994), on fiscal reform (1980-1983) and on public sector debt restructuring (1984). Between 1989 and 1991, she chaired the Presidential Commission for Industrial Competitiveness. Ms. Krivoy graduated Summa Cum Laude from Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Guillermo Mondino, LatinSource Argentina
Guillermo Mondino has been advisor for LatinSource since January 2002. He is also founder of MacroVision, an economic consulting firm in Buenos Aires. Concurrently, he is chief economist at the Fundacion Mediterranea's Instituto de Estudios sobre la Realidad Argentina y Latinoamerica (IERAL). In 2001, Dr. Mondino served as secretary of Economic Policy and was chief cabinet of the Economic Advisors at the Ministry of Economy of Argentina. Dr. Mondino also served as chief advisor to the governments of Ecuador, Indonesia, Ukraine and Mexico. He was visiting professor at the University of Chicago, Universidad Di-Tella, among others. He graduated in Economics from Universidad de Cordoba and has a Doctorate in Economics from Yale University.
Affonso Celso Pastore, LatinSource Brazil
Affonso Pastore has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1995. He is also the president of A.C. Pastore & Associados, which he founded in 1994. Prior to this, Dr. Pastore served as president of the Central Bank of Brazil from 1983 to 1985. He also worked as secretary of finance for the State of Sao Paulo, between 1979 and 1983. Dr. Pastore was research director of the Instituto de Pesquisas Economicas. He currently teaches at Universidade de Sao Paulo. Dr. Pastore has a Bachelors and Doctorate in Economics from Universidade de Sao Paulo.
Roberto Steiner, LatinSource Colombia
Roberto Steiner has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1999. He is also head of the Center for Economic Research at Universidad de Los Andes. Previously, Mr. Steiner worked at Fedesarrollo, a prestigious research and consulting firm in Bogota. He was also part of the research department at the Central Bank of Colombia for ten years. Mr. Steiner also served as advisor and chief economist at The World Bank in Washington, D.C. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Universidad de Los Andes and M.A. and a M. Phil. in Economics from Columbia University.
Jose Valderrama, LatinSource Peru
Jose Valderrame has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1999. He is also a partner at Econsult, an economic consulting firm in Lima. In 1999, Mr. Valderrama was advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. From 1989 to 1994, he was a staff member at International Monetary Fund. From 1986 to 1988, Mr. Valderrama was senior economist at the Peruvian consulting firm Apoyo S.A. Between 1983 and 1985, he was head of economics at the Central Bank of Peru. Mr. Valderrama has also served as director of Economic Affairs and advisor to the Minister of Economy and Finance. He holds degrees from the Catholic University of Peru and Vanderbilt University.
Andres Velasco, LatinSource Chile
Andres Velasco has been an advisor for LatinSource since 1994. He is also the Sumitomo-FASID Professor of International Finance and Development at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. From 1990 to 1992, Dr. Velasco served as chief of staff at the Ministry of Finance of Chile. In 1995, he was chief economist and deputy lead negotiator in Chile's NAFTA accession team. Dr. Velasco has also served as advisor to the governments of Ecuador, El Salvador, among other institutions. He has a BA and MA in Economics from Yale University and a Doctorate in Economics from Columbia University.
